[ad thread/a_pr/3/0]I used to treat optional bosses like background noise, but Blackjaw, The Remnant in the Oubliette of Jiquani's Machinarium is the kind that quietly pays you back for the rest of the campaign. He isn't there to waste your time. He's there to teach you how the game wants you to move, and he drops a permanent Fire Resistance boost that keeps working long after you've forgotten the room layout. That's a big deal when you're trying not to overpay for fixes on gear, because every extra suffix you don't need for resists is one less reason to burn through PoE 2 Currency chasing "good enough" rolls.
Blackjaw looks like a classic "don't get near him" boss, so people backpedal and roll straight out. That's exactly what he wants. Most of his scary stuff is pointed forward: the big Slam arcs, the breath cone, the follow-up swipes when he thinks you're panicking. If you stand at mid-range, you're giving him the easiest angles. The safer habit is weird at first—play tight, then drift around his flank. Keep your camera on him, keep your feet moving, and treat his front like a no-go zone. You'll notice he has tunnel vision, and once you're at his side he spends a lot of time turning instead of hitting.
In the first stretch, the Slam is the move that clips people. He'll often chain it, and the second one catches the "roll away" reflex. Don't do that. Roll sideways, then slide back in while he's stuck recovering. You're not just avoiding damage—you're buying free uptime. The Flamethrower-style breath is the other check. When he pulls air in, assume the cone is coming and start circling. Pick a direction and commit, because hesitating is how you eat the edge of the stream and get ignited. If you've got a flask setup that can help with burning, it's worth bringing here.
Once he shifts gears, the room starts doing work for him. He'll Jump Slam to close distance, and the landing AoE is the moment you must respect—dodge first, think later. After that, it's the ground effects and extra projectiles that ruin runs. This is where players get greedy, because he's still "just" a melee boss, right? Then you realise you're standing in burning ground while trying to trade hits. Don't trade. Reset your position, find clean space, then re-enter on his side. If the arena looks messy, take a breath and let him finish his tantrum before you recommit.
Beating Blackjaw isn't about flexing gear; it's a positioning lesson that pays out in a way you'll actually feel. The Flame Core's +10% Fire Resistance frees up your build in a very real, very practical way, especially as fire-heavy encounters start stacking up later. If you'd rather spend your time mapping than shopping, you can lean on smart upgrades and services when needed—just don't make it your only plan, even if you decide to grab a quick top-up from U4GM to smooth out a rough gearing patch mid-progression.
